Born in Watertown, Mass., September,1754; was sergeant at battle of Lexington, 1775; captain, 1791 Major, 1793; came to Detroit with Anthony Wayne, 1796; ordered to Fort Wayne, 1798; wounded in several battles; commendant in Detroit, 1800; became lieutenant colonel, 1802; colonel, 1803; transferred to St.Louis, Mo. , 1805; died at Bellefontaine, Mo. Aug. 18, 1808. He married Eunice Wellington and had eleven children, among them Ruth Fessenden, Henry Jackson, John Elliott, and William Brown Hunt....

Samuel C. Vance (d. 1830), a U.S. Army officer in the Northwest Territory, was deputy paymaster at Fort Washington, near Cincinnati (1791-1802). From 1803-1830 he was a merchant and land speculator at Lawrenceburg (Dearborn County, Ind.). Lawrence M. Vance operated a general merchandise store in Indianapolis and was a contractor for the construction of the Lawrenceburg and Upper Mississippi Railroad and other railroad lines.
